One of the best things about being a senior photographer in Atlanta is the length of the shooting season. With short Winters in the South, we usually have 8+ months of decent weather for sessions. Granted, we make up for it with blazing, humid Summers, but evening sessions can help a bit with that. I consider myself lucky to be able to photograph a variety of styles and seasons.
If you’re wondering which one might be right for you, I’ve listed a few pros and cons for each so you can determine the season you should schedule your senior photos session based on weather, outfit style, and your commitments throughout the year.
SPRING
One of the most popular seasons for senior photos is Spring. Of course- the weather is beautiful and flowers are beginning to bloom! But if you have allergies, this might be the worst season for you. Or maybe you play a Spring sport and your schedule will be hectic. Check out Aniyah’s Spring session HERE.
PROS:
– temperate weather
– days are getting longer for nice sunset shots
– nature is almost at it’s peak of beauty
– perfect for sundresses and warm weather fashion
CONS:
– pollen for those with seasonal allergies
– Spring sports and extracurriculars might dominate you schedule
– tends to be busy season so you may compromise on dates
– rain may mean rescheduling
SUMMER
Early Summer is a huge draw for upcoming seniors for a few reasons- get your session done before school begins and the weather isn’t too hot yet. Everything is lush and green from the Spring rain and most people aren’t thinking about portraits so you get your pick of dates. See Gretchen’s Summer session HERE
PROS:
– choice of dates for your session and usually more free time in your schedule
– perfect if you love Summer fashion- flowy dresses, shorts, and barefeet
– long days mean beautiful, warm sunsets
– you are a nice golden tan
CONS:
– too late and it gets very hot and humid
– sunburns from lazy days at the pool
– Summer jobs may cause scheduling conflicts
FALL:
Is there any season more synonymous with senior portraits than Fall? You’re excited about senior year, the weather is cooling off and we *sometimes* get nice Fall colors. But, it’s BUSY- everyone tends to rush to get their session scheduled in this season which can create an issue if your calendar is limited. See Julianna’s Fall session HERE
PROS:
– early in the year so you know they’re done
– mild temperatures
– can combine warm and cool weather styles
CONS:
– busy season may mean fewer available dates to choose from
– Fall sports and activities dominate your schedule
– days getting shorter mean earlier session start times
WINTER
A much overlooked season, Winter in Atlanta tends to be very mild at the start. December is actually a popular month for people who hate sweating, but maybe don’t want to compete for time in the busy Fall. And technically, Winter doesn’t even start until late December anyway 😉 Don’t write this season off! Check our Marissa’s Winter session HERE.
PROS:
– more choice of dates
– perfect for those who love cozy sweaters and cold weather fashion
– dramatic lighting for great moody looks
CONS:
– “dreary” for those who want bright images
– unpredictable weather
– shorter days mean quick sunsets and early session times
